Secrets of the Saucy Seaside Postcard, Art work of the Comic Postcard from the studio of Bamforth & Co

Saturday 18 June- Sunday 11 September 2005

Revisit a bygone age of piers, proms and pleasure beaches in an exhibition of original postcard artwork by the famous West Yorkshire company Bamforth & Co. On loan from Kirklees Community History Service, these postcards take viewers back to an era when naughty was truly nice!

The exhibition revisits the traditional British seaside holiday and explores the national attitudes the images represent. Admire the artistry and attention to detail in these ephemeral works of art that have become, more than anything else, the product which defines a ‘week at the seaside’.

Councillor David Jeffels, Cabinet Member for Tourism and Leisure Services said ‘This show is perfect for Scarborough’s summer season, it sounds like great fun.’

Admission to Scarborough Museums & Gallery is by Annual Pass; pay once and visit as many times as you like for a whole year: £2.50 Adult, £1.50 Concession or £6 Family.

Talent Spotted at Scarborough Art Gallery

Local artist Katie Gill submitted work to an open exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery in 2004, and Curators were so impressed with her paintings they offered her a show of her own. Katie’s work will be on show in the Coffee Lounge at the Gallery until Saturday 25 June.

Artist Katie said: ‘It was a great compliment to be approached by Scarborough Art Gallery. It is my first solo exhibition and I was very nervous about it as doing a group show is far less daunting!’ Katie trained in art at the University of Hull, Scarborough Campus and graduated in 2003. As well as her degree show in Scarborough, she has also shown work in London, Nottingham and Hull. ‘It has taken a while for me to get a body of work together since leaving university, but now things are taking off. It’s especially nice that my first solo show is here in my home town.’

Visitors to the Gallery can see the exhibition in the Coffee Lounge for free. All works are for sale, and four pieces have already been snapped up by art-lovers.

Scarborough Art Gallery is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11am-4pm until 28 May. From 29 May until the end of September the Gallery opens every day except Monday, 10am-5pm.

Admission to other exhibitions is by Annual Pass: pay once and visit Scarborough Art Gallery, Wood End Museum and the Rotunda Museum as many times as you like for a whole year. Adults £2.50, Concessions £1.50, Family £6.

Friends’ Gift to Scarborough Art Gallery

Friends of Scarborough Art Gallery have paid for 38 of the Gallery’s works on paper to be conserved by expert Ruth Prosser. Ruth visited the Gallery to assess the condition of works in store, and watercolour paintings and prints in need of urgent work were sent to her studio for restoration. Ms Prosser cleaned and remounted prints and paintings that were beginning to suffer from tiny specks of mould or the effects of acidic mount boards, which turn brown over time and can discolour the artwork.

Curator of Art, Louise Marr said “ The Friends have been very generous paying for this work to be done. One of the main aims of their fundraising is to help look after the Gallery’s collection, and this project has certainly done that.”

The Friends of Scarborough Art Gallery also raised funds in 2004 to provide portable seats for visitors to the Gallery.

Councillor David Jeffels said “It’s great that we have such an enthusiastic group of Friends at Scarborough Art Gallery. I’d like to offer my thanks to them for all their support over the years.”

The Sea, The Sea - Maritime Artworks from the Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne

Scarborough Art Gallery has teamed up with another seaside gallery, the Towner in Eastbourne, to borrow an exhibition of artworks on the theme of the sea. ‘The Sea, The Sea’ brings together a broad range of art from the eighteenth century to the present day, showing the sea in all its guises, from a stage for industry and war to the place of leisure and beauty we are more familiar with in Scarborough.

From depictions of specific places and events, such as Muirhead Bone’s wartime naval drawing to the imagined narratives of the artist mariner Alfred Wallis, this exhibition explores artists’ enduring fascination with the sea. The exhibition features works by Bill Brandt and Paul Nash on loan from the Arts Council Collection, at the Hayward Gallery, London as well as those from the Towner including examples by Thomas Joshua Cooper, Alan Davie, Paul Graham, Peter Lanyon, Victor Pasmore, Alfred Wallis and Christopher Wood.

Teachers Support Museums To Schools

Teachers from seven primary schools are working with Scarborough Museums & Gallery as part of its new Museums to Schools project.

Museums to Schools aims to give children and teachers from the Borough’s primary schools greater access to the collections of Scarborough’s museums and art gallery. Four freelance educators have been recruited and are being trained to bring museum objects to life for schools using observation, hands-on investigation, storytelling, games and activities.

Cayton, East Ayton, East Whitby, Hackness, Hinderwell, Overdale and Wheatcroft primaries have agreed to be Partner Schools for the project. They will be involved with every stage of its development to ensure that it meets the needs of schools as closely as possible. Teachers from the schools have ventured ‘behind the scenes’ to learn more about the range of collections held by the Museums & Gallery Service and have worked with staff to select the themes that the Freelance Educators will explore. The freelancers are currently researching the object-based sessions that they will deliver to schools and will trial them in Partner Schools before their general launch in June 2005.

Mrs K Hyatt, Headteacher of Overdale Community Primary, Eastfield said: “Museums to Schools is just what schools need and we are very happy to support the project.”

Councillor David Jeffels, Cabinet Member for Tourism, Leisure and Community Services added: “Scarborough’s museums and art gallery are a wonderful resource for schools and I’m delighted to see them working in partnership with local teachers to develop this exciting new project.”

Museums to Schools is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Teachers wanting to know more about the project should contact Tracy Teasdale, Museums to Schools Officer, on +44 (0)1723 383575 or e-mail tracy.teasdale@scarborough.gov.uk

Exhibition Of Children’s Artwork - Scarborough Art Gallery. 5 March - 2 April 2005

Scarborough Art Gallery will be displaying sculpture made by children from local primary schools over the Easter Holidays. The annual exhibition, organised by North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP) and the Gallery gives school children a chance to make work on a theme and see it displayed alongside work by professional artists. This year, the children have used Victorian paintings on display at the Gallery as the inspiration for their work

Curator of Art, Louise Marr, said: “We really enjoy seeing how differently each school has responded to the theme. The children and their parents get the chance to attend a special Preview before the exhibition opens to the public, and it’s an added attraction for other young visitors during the school holidays.”

Scarborough Art Gallery will be open Tuesday - Sunday, 10am - 5pm during the school holidays. Admission to Scarborough Museums & Gallery is by Annual Pass; pay once and visit Scarborough Art Gallery, the Rotunda Museum and Wood End Museum as many times as you like for a whole year: £2.50 Adult, £1.50 Concession or £6 Family.

Scarborough Art Gallery has a Resource Room with gallery trails, quizzes, dressing up clothes, books and art materials for children and families. Toilets, baby changing and buggy park facilities available.

Lunchtime Talks at Scarborough Art Gallery

Scarborough Art Gallery is proud to be the venue launching ‘Uncanny Tales’ on a national and international tour. Showing work by four of the strongest figurative artists working in the UK today, this exhibition has been put together by the Foundation for Women’s Art and contains work by Paula Rego, Ana Maria Pacheco, Marcelle Hanselaar and Oona Grimes.

Drawing on sources as diverse as Hogarth and Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Paula Rego shows etchings from the Nursery Rhyme and Pendle Witches series, as well as lithographs from her recently acclaimed Jane Eyre portfolio. Ana Maria Pacheco’s dry point etchings reflect her concern with the dark side of Catholicism, offering a unique retelling of Old Testament stories and her own interpretation of legend. Marcelle Hanselaar’s concern with childhood and sexuality shows nothing yet suggests everything, her paintings and prints reminiscent of German Expressionism in their power to disturb. Oona Grimes brings a touch of lightness with her dismembered cartoon-like figures cavorting through childhood as well as her delicate evocations of floating matter in her How Clever of God series.

The Foundation for Women’s Art is a networking, administrative and educational organisation whose core activity is to promote women artists and their work.

A full colour catalogue is available to accompany the exhibition.

Some viewers may find images in this show disturbing.
